Your dental anatomy professors will tell you that undersized lateral incisors, also known as “peg laterals”, are rare. This actually falls in line with a 2013 meta-analysis by Hua et al in which the prevalence of peg laterals was found to be less than 3% across various races. Interestingly enough, this phenomenon is actually seen quite often in practice, particularly in women. It is not uncommon for patients to present with composite veneers placed using traditional methods and materials in their earlier years, though the contours, shade, and polish are less than ideal. Considering the increasing demand for clear aligner orthodontic interventions, learning how to treat undersized lateral incisors in the most conservative way possible is a tremendous service to patients.
